Does Medicare Pay for Assisted Living in Florida?
Separating medicare medical coverage from long-term custodial care.

This guide is educational and does not determine benefits eligibility, insurance coverage or clinical suitability. Rules, prices and provider participation change. Always verify information with the relevant government program, insurer or facility.
The confusion comes from mixing medical care with custodial care
Assisted living primarily provides housing, supervision and help with activities of daily living. Medicare’s coverage is centered on medically necessary health services, not ongoing room, board and personal-care residency.
Short-term skilled care is different
After a qualifying hospitalization, Medicare Part A may cover limited skilled nursing facility care when all requirements are met. That is not the same as paying for long-term assisted living.
Keep Medicare even when it does not pay the rent
Residents still use Medicare for covered physicians, outpatient care, therapies, medications and other eligible health services. The fact that Medicare does not pay assisted-living rent does not make Medicare irrelevant.

Frequently asked questions
Does Medicare pay for assisted living in Florida?
Generally no. Medicare does not pay for long-term custodial care or assisted-living room and board.
Will Medicare pay for a caregiver in assisted living?
Coverage depends on the medical service, not simply the location. Routine custodial assistance is generally not covered.
Does Medicare pay for medications while in assisted living?
Medicare drug coverage can continue under the resident’s Part D or Medicare Advantage plan, subject to normal plan rules.
Does Medicare cover physical therapy in assisted living?
It may cover medically necessary therapy when Medicare requirements are met.
Does Medicare cover memory care?
It may cover eligible medical services for a person with dementia, but not the general long-term room-and-board cost of memory care.

Part A may cover qualifying short-term skilled nursing facility care after hospitalization under specific rules.
Is skilled nursing the same as assisted living?
No. Skilled nursing provides a higher level of clinical care and has different Medicare rules.

Can long-term-care insurance help?
Potentially, depending on the policy.
What should families budget for?
Plan for assisted-living room, board and care charges as private-pay obligations unless another verified benefit applies.
Where should I verify Medicare coverage?
Use Medicare.gov or the resident’s Medicare plan for current coverage decisions, not a facility marketing page.
